DC Comic MMO

dc-universe-450x199 DC Comic MMO

In late June both Shack and Kotaku reported news from Edge Magazine about the new DC Comic MMOG (Massively Multplayer Online Game) that Sony Online Entertainment is currently working on (with comic legend Jim Lee on board as well).

The game will be available for next gen platforms and PC.

This is interesting news, even if I wished there were a manga based MMO. The only one I know about is Dragon Ball Z Online. Do you know of any other ones?

Going back to the DC MMO, Jim Lee describes the game as a “kick-ass hybrid between a traditional MMO and a first-person action console game” while Sony has just updated their DC MMO myspace page with new screenshots.

(What do you think from the first looks? Would you play this game?)

And the various sources report that it will include all classic MMO characteristics:

  • choice of alignment and powers, including movement abilities like flying and teleporting
  • level-based character development.
  • powers that develop accordingly to level
  • social network
  • instanced locals and large scale environments (which means you can go from a huge “public” city to an “instanced” private building where you and your party will not encounter other gamers

It also looks like the comic story lines might cross over into the game, which would be something that would definitely make the comic fans happy. On another note, though, you will not be able to play as any known super hero. So no, you cant play like Batman… and that makes sense, cause otherwise you’d be running around a virtual DC world where there are thousands of Supermans, Flashs, Batmans (and no Robins)…

Still you’ll be able to meet them around and about the game and interact with them as they will probably be giving you missions to accomplish.

Finally, the game will be showing for the first time at Comic-Con at the end of the month. In an attempt to boost viral marketing, SOE is asking make its page a top Myspace friend. Those who so so can win a chance at entry into their exclusive Comic-Con party. Do you have myspace and want to go to the Comic-Con party?

A DC Comics MMO… I would finally be able to out let my inner Batman.
Interacting with known superheroes would be cool, unless they are there only to give you missions that they’d be able to accomplish in half the time it takes them to give you the quest.
Having comic story lines cross over into the game would be a nice move. And if top players’ action could influence the comic, I can barely imagine how competitive the game could get.

    Manga/anime MMO?
Eh, that would be cool. The only licensed one I know is Gundam Online, but it was never marketed in Europe and it has been shut off last year.
Dragon Ball Z MMO doesn’t look promising.

What I’m really looking forward to are the new MMORPG by Bioware and the next gen MMORPG by Blizzard (dear baby Jesus, I’ve been a good boy, please make it be World of Starcraft)

I’m kind of scared of what Dragon Ball Z Online is going to end up being too. The Bioware one should be incredibly kewl.
I actually think a Naruto online would be fun too…
